Building a Global Destination: Jumla's Heritage, Karnali's Pride, from Ancient Sinja to Global Tourism: Elevating Karnali Provience.
Nestled in the Karnali Province of Nepal, particularly in the Sija River area of Jumla district, lies a region regarded as one of the world's oldest examples of natural beauty, cultural heritage, artistic prowess, and craftsmanship. This area is rich in history, encompassing temples, literature, language, art, architecture, sculpture, and folk traditions.
Historically known as the “Golden Land of the Khas Mandal”, the region stretches from the Trishuli River westward. Six generations after King Ashok Challa centralized governance in Sija, forming the extensive Khas Empire.
Located at an altitude of approximately 3,050 meters, the region produces indigenous crops such as Marsi rice, apples, beans, soybeans, peaches, and walnuts. Surrounding forests and high-altitude plateaus host valuable medicinal herbs like Yarsagumba, Guchi mushrooms, Shilajit, and Hathe Kanchi.
Winter temperatures range from -5°C to -8°C, while spring brings moderate temperatures between 18°C and 25°C with blossoming apple orchards. Monsoon seasons enrich agriculture, and autumn offers ideal conditions for tourism and herb collection.
Yarsagumba (Ophiocordyceps sinensis), found between 3,800–4,600 meters, is a globally valuable medicinal product fetching up to NPR 4 million per kilogram.
The region has emerged as a hub for comprehensive enterprise development, attracting domestic and international tourists. Annual festivals, helicopter tours, cultural performances, and enterprise demonstrations promote sustainable livelihoods while preserving cultural heritage.

The birthplace of the Khas Arya, the capital of the ancient Sija Kingdom at Lamatada where King Nagraj ruled, the temple of Kanaka Sundari, the Pandav Cave where Draupadi and the five Pandavas stayed, the Himalayan search leading to Kailash and Mansarovar, the snowmelt river flowing from the melting snow, the Marsi rice fields, traditional houses built from local stone, villages, local attire, and clothes made from local materials produced since ancient times, handicrafts, and wooden products such as beds, storage containers, chests, kitchen items, all represent the local culture.
Visitors will also observe animals like cows, horses, sheep, and goats, and experience local agriculture with crops such as millet, wheat, maize, barley, and rice. Additionally, they will get to observe the cultivation and tasting of fruits such as apricots, walnuts, and apples.
For both internal and external tourists, there will be a two-day experience of sightseeing within 51 kilometers of Sija civilization, including scenic nature hikes, swimming, cycling, and playing sports like volleyball, football, and running. Tourists will also enjoy local cultural activities such as Deuda dance, Bhari game, and Hudke dance.
On the third day, tourists will be taken by helicopter to Yarsa Gumba collection zones at altitudes between 3,500 and 4,600 meters, followed by cultural programs and return flights. The journey extends to six days, making it a global model for integrated tourism and enterprise development.
